Burst Into Books' mission is to rebuild our village through advocacy, the arts, educational and family programming. We envision a world transformed by cultural literacy through education.

Burst Into Books is a CPS Vendor and a 501(c)(3) nonprofit committed to helping the youth deepen their love of reading by integrating the arts, providing opportunities for them to engage with literary experts and authors, providing a space for self-expression.

Our staple program is our monthly book club sessions in which we support the entire spectrum of the development of the child, from 6 months of age to 18 years old. Each group has been carefully created with a curriculum that is age-appropriate, culturally relevant, and academic-driven. A reading guide/group leader and literacy expert guest is selected by the Founder and Executive Director, Jurema Gorham.

reading statistics

Providing kids with a stream of age-appropriate books can triple interest in childhood reading (Harris, L., 2003)

Only 35% of public school students read at or above the Proficient level, in Texas the average drops to only 25% (U.S. Department of Education, 2017)

Kids who regularly read have better language skills, larger vocabularies and high cognitive skills than non-readers (Child Development, 2006)

47% of fourth-graders from low-income families read below the basic level (Rif.org)

Children who read too frequently are more likely to count to 20, write their own name and read (NCES)

A study of K-12 student reading habits demonstrated that six extra minutes of reading per day can turn a struggling reader into one who meets or surpasses their grade’s benchmark.

Third grade students who are “proficient” in reading are almost five times more likely to graduate high school than their peers with “below-basic” reading skills. 82% of sixth graders who fail an English class don’t graduate high school.

Households with an income of $100,000 or more had almost twice the number of books in the home compared to households with an income of $35,000 or less.
